چکیده

Spreading of liquids and soft solids on a rigid surface in a surrounding liquid medium is investigated by utilizing the lateral sensitivity of the quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). While the QCM has been used extensively to study systems with spatial variations in the direction normal to the crystal's electrodes, few studies have exploited the QCM's ability to sense changes in loading in the plane of the electrodes. We propose equations to describe the predicted response of the QCM to a generalized viscoelastic material spreading at the QCM surface at the expense of the surrounding liquid medium. Several experimental examples are given in order to support the validity of the proposed equations, including situations where the spreading material is a Newtonian liquid, a viscoelastic liquid, or one of two viscoelastic solids. The first viscoelastic solid is a physically cross-linked gel based on a styrene/ethylene-butene/styrene triblock copolymer in mineral oil, and the second is a cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogel.

Response of Quartz Crystal Microbalance Loaded with Single-drop Liquid in Gas Phase

The frequency response of quartz crystal microbalance loaded by single-drop liquid is studied in this paper. Previous studies have shown that the relationship between resonant frequency and properties of liquid by completely immersing one side of the crystal in liquid. In this work, only localized portion of crystal was wetted by liquid droplet. Repeated experiment shows the relationship betwee...

QCM Viscometer for Bioremediation and Microbial Activity Monitoring

A quartz crystal microbalance has been used to monitor the polymer production of a bacterial population in liquid medium. The increasing amount of produced polymer corresponds to an increase in the viscosity of the liquid, which is directly measurable as the fluid contacts the surface of the quartz crystal in the sensor system. This procedure is being developed as a novel method for measuring m...

Quartz crystal microbalance studies on conformational change of polymer chains at interface.

The conformation of polymers at interface profoundly influences the interfacial properties. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) is a newly developed technique to detect polymer behavior at interface in real time. In this article, we mainly review our QCM-D studies. Our focus is on temperature induced collapse and swelling of tethered polymer chains, pancake-to-brush transition ...

Hierarchical Thin Film Architectures for Enhanced Sensor Performance: Liquid Crystal-Mediated Electrochemical Synthesis of Nanostructured Imprinted Polymer Films for the Selective Recognition of Bupivacaine

Nanostructured bupivacaine-selective molecularly imprinted 3-aminophenylboronic acid-p-phenylenediamine co-polymer (MIP) films have been prepared on gold-coated quartz (Au/quartz) resonators by electrochemical synthesis under cyclic voltammetric conditions in a liquid crystalline (LC) medium (triton X-100/water). Films prepared in water and in the absence of template were used for control studi...
